Maundy Thursday

This is the day we remember the Last Supper and the commandment Jesus gave his disciples (and us) to “love one another.” If you (or your grown-ups) watched the video with the Revs. Noah Van Niel and Mary Cat Young (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JclciEHkJKs&feature=youtu.be), you know that the word Maundy comes from the Latin word “mandatum,” which means “commandment.” That’s why we call this day Maundy Thursday; it’s the day Jesus gave us the commandment to love one another.

Before that last supper, Jesus washed his friends’ dusty feet. In the hot and sandy desert, people’s feet get dirty. They need to be washed more often than our Chapel Hill Tar Heels (and toes). Still, the disciples were surprised when Jesus knelt down, wrapped a towel around his waist and washed their feet. Will you wash each other’s feet at home tonight?

After supper, Jesus asked his friends to walk with him to a garden where he would pray. He asked the friends to stay awake and keep vigil – to watch and wait with him all through the night. They fell asleep.
